"View at Portage"

This early Anthony view was taken from the north west bank of the river, looking toward the Upper Falls and Portage Bridge that can be seen in the distance, In the foreground is a what appears to be a "camp" - complete with tent and basket. ( Some believe the tent was actually the photographer's darkroom.)

If you look closely you will see the lattice bridge that once carried a road across the River not far from the brink of the Middle Falls. Also note that this was the Valley as Mr. Letchworth first saw it - this photograph probably taken no more than a year after he purchased his first lands at Portage!
