Our Letchworth History Photo Album

Photos 16 a & b

The two images below were stereoviews made by the E & H. T. Anthony & Company in the late 1860s or early 1870s. There were both made from the upper deck of the Portage Railroad Bridge, looking north. Specific information about each of the stereoviews and enlarged images are found below. These photographs show portions of Mr. Letchworth's lands about a decade after he established his Glen Iris Estate.

Inspiration point is in the distance in this view from the Bridge. Just above the middle of the image the waters of the Genesee River tumble over the Middle Falls. To the left of the falls are several buildings, the center one being the Glen Iris. Note the farm, mill, and other structures on the flats between the Upper and Middle Falls. Also note the buildings on the east (right) bank of the river. See an enlarged view below.

This image was also taken from the deck of the Portage Bridge, looking North. The photographer focused on the East bank of the Genesee River. You can trace the Genesee Valley Canal as it winds from under the Bridge to the Slide Area where a wooden aqueduct was built to protect the Canal. The mist of the Upper falls is visible in the lower left corner. See an enlarged view below.
