LETCHWORTH STATE PARK CENTENNIAL
2006-2007 EVENTS AND FESTIVALS

 

MAY 20-21, 2006 ­ "FIRE ON THE GENESEE": Civil War Encampment, Living History and Battle Re-enactments featuring Union, Confederate and Civilian participants. Camps open 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Battles at 2:00 PM, Highbanks Recreation Area.

MAY 26, 2006 ­ "CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OPENING CEREMONIES": Join us for the rededication and Grand reopening of the William Pryor Letchworth Museum. Be one of the first to experience some never before exhibited artifacts. Ceremonies begin at 1:00 pm. Public invited to tour museum beginning at 4pm.

MAY 26, 2006 ­ "COUNCIL GROUNDS TOURS" New for the Centennial!! Daily tours of the Seneca Council Grounds until October 31st each year. Go inside and feel the history within the walls of the Jemison Cabin as well as the Seneca Council House from the 1700's. Learn about Mary Jemison an Indian captive also known as "The White Woman of the Genesee".

MAY 26 ­ end of season, 2006 ­ "GLEN IRIS INN" New for the Centennial!! New dinner menus reflecting recipes from Mr. Letchworth's era will be offered, along with the Glen's favorite dishes. May 27, 2006 ­"CENTENNIAL CONCERT AND FIREWORKS DISPLAY": Enjoy patriotic and historic music from America's glorious past. Musical performances begin at 3:00 pm. We are topping this one off with a spectacular fireworks display at 9:00 pm. Lower Falls Area.

MAY 26-29, 2006 ­ "RED, WHITE AND BLUE BALLOON RALLY": 5 massed balloon flights, Friday 6:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday 6:00 AM and 6:30 PM, Monday 6:00 AM, launching from The Archery Field near the Castile entrance. Come see the the special 100th Birthday Cake Balloon only during this Centennial Celebration!

MAY 31, 2006 ­ "WILLIAM PRYOR LETCHWORTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION": School groups are encouraged to attend this one. The General public is also welcome. An outdoor celebration with 10 stations to visit, each station will have a different topic of discussion. Topics include flintknapping, civil war camp life, Wool spinning, listen and watch a portrayal of Mr. Letchworth and Caroline Bishop. Cake will be available. Call 585-493-3616 for more information. JUNE 3, 2006 ­ "FREE LEARN TO CATCH A FISH FAMILY PICNIC": Carnival style event featuring games, activities, educational workshops, free fishing (no license required), free lunch and door prizes. Presented in conjunction with DEC and Cornell Cooperative Extension. 12:00 Noon to 6:00pm at Trailside Lodge.

JUNE 20,2006 ­ "ANTIQUE CAR TOUR": Come watch as 80 Pre 1916 cars tour Letchworth State Park. They will begin at Mount Morris at 10:30 am and drive to the Glen Iris Inn. Cars will be on display from 1-3pm at the Glen Iris. Come see how the Glen Iris might have appeared in the 1900's.

 

JULY 8, 2006 ­ "HIGHBANKS CELTIC GATHERING": Highland Games Competition, Bagpipe Band Competition, Celtic Bands and Dancers, Clan Displays, Crafts, Food. 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Highbanks Recreation Area.

JULY 11 ­ AUGUST 29, 2006 ­ "LEARN ABOUT LETCHWORTH" LECTURE SERIES: Lecture programs highlighting the history and environmental heritage of Letchworth and the Genesee Valley area. Presented on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the Lower Falls Restaurant.

JULY 22, 2006 ­ QUILT SHOW: display of antique, historical and modern quilts with fabric and material vendors. 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Trailside Lodge

AUGUST 26-27, 2006 ­ "STONE TOOL TECHNOLOGY SHOW": Flintknapping, tool making demonstrations, Native American Crafts, 19th Century Mountain Men encampment, Atl-Atl competition. 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Highbanks Recreation Area.

SEPTEMBER 3, 2006 ­ "SUMMER FAREWELL FESTIVAL": Musical performances, comedy/variety acts, family activities, food and fireworks. 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Highbanks Recreation Area.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2006 ­ " 11th ANNUAL GLEN IRIS 5K RUN" Run benefiting the Cordelia A. Greene Library in Castile New York. Prizes and food for participants. Visit www.glenirisinn.com, or call 585-493-2622 for details.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2006 ­ "NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE DAYS": Come and enjoy the return of this popular event. Watch Native American Dancers perform traditional dances and learn about their cultural significance. Also featuring athletic and craft demonstrations, Native American food and other goods. Trailside Lodge Area 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

OCTOBER 7-9, 2006 - LETCHWORTH ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW AND SALE: over 300 arts and crafts exhibitors, food vendors and live entertainment. 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Highbanks Recreation Area.

* JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2007 - SLEIGH AND CUTTER RALLY: antique, classic and modern horse-drawn sleighs and cutters on display and available for rides, food and refreshments. 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Trailside Lodge and Archery Field Area.

* MAY 2007 - GLEN IRIS ARTS SHOW: displays of visual arts from some of the area's finest includes paintings, photographs, sketches/drawings, sculptures, etcfood and refreshments available. Glen Iris Inn and grounds, further details to be determined.

* LATE SEPT. /MID-OCT 2007 ­ "LAST COUNCIL FIRE" RE-ENACTMENT & 135TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION: Council Grounds, further details to be determined.
